Business Automation Engineer (24-32 hours/week)

The unit: data & digital initiative 510

is the data and digital unit in the Netherlands Red Cross. 510 improves humanitarian action by developing data and digital solutions for our partners. 510 is part of the International Assistance division in the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC). Since its founding in 2016, 510 has grown into a team of 100 core and project staff, students and volunteer experts. Our partners are Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee Of the Red Cross (ICRC). Our services include Digital Transformation and Information Management, major products focus on Cash & Voucher Assistance, Anticipatory Action and Community Engagement & Accountability.

The role: Business Automation Engineer

We are looking for a Business Automation Engineer who is driven by the desire to make a significant impact in the humanitarian sector. As part of the data and digital team 510 within the Netherlands Red Cross, you will play an instrumental role in optimizing our digital processes, leading to more efficient delivery of humanitarian aid. You will have the unique opportunity to use your technical skills to streamline workflows, enhance data management, and improve training materials. Your contributions will directly influence the success of our operations and enable us to better serve those in need. This position sits in 510’s Operations Team and reports to the Operations Team Lead. You will work closely with data specialists, 510’s Unit Lead and a Netherlands Red Cross backoffice support partner.

The position is based in the Netherlands and requires frequent presence in our office in the Hague. Working remotely part-time is possible.

Roles & responsibilities:

Within 3 months:

  • Gain a thorough understanding of the our business processes, technology stack, and data architecture.
  • Debug and improve existing workflows
  • Learn into our Azure SQL databases, and be able to improve views and stored procedures
  • Understand the operation of all Power Automate workflows
  • Learn into the low-code platform Retool to automate tasks such as invoicing, appraisals, consultancy contracts, and approval.
  • Provide input to training materials and offer guidance to trainers to educate the team on the effective use of the CRM.
  • Within 6 months:

  • Continuously improve and automate business processes for maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Collaborate with various teams and stakeholders to understand their requirements, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions.
  • Thoroughly understand all policies and standards for data integrity, privacy, and security.
  • Document all aspects of the data architecture, including components, data pipelines, and workflows.
  • Manage the GitHub issues, ensuring users provide actionable tickets.
  • Provide clear guidance and support to trainers and team members.
  • Within 12 months:

  • Develop and implement plans for business automation and data management, including the simplification of the current data architecture and tools used
  • Set up new workflows for more complex processes
  • Act as a subject matter expert in business automation and data management, providing guidance to technical and non-technical colleagues alike.
  • Ensure compliance and security requirements are met for all workflows, automations, and data management practices.
  • Continuously improve the documentation of the data architecture, including components, data pipelines, and workflows.
  • What do you bring?

  • You have a good understanding of business automation and process improvement, ideally within the context of humanitarian operations or non-profit organizations
  • You have hands-on experience in managing a CRM and familiarity with Power Automate and Azure SQL database.
  • You demonstrate a thorough understanding of the full data and digital landscape, including data pipelines, workflows, and GitHub issue management.
  • Your expertise in business automation and data management is recognized and valued by technical and non-technical colleagues alike.
  • You have experience in the development and documentation of data architectures and systems.
  • You are able to provide clear guidance and support to trainers and team members.
  • You are a self-starter who can work independently and proactively drive change within a team or organization.
  • You have excellent proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
  • You must possess a permit to work and live in the Netherlands.

The salary is set in scale 11 and dependent upon education and relevant professional experience (min. € 3.869,44 and max. € 5.031,20,- gross based on fulltime position).

    Our office is in the Hague, walking distance from the Laan van NOI station. Based on our re-work concept you work partly from home and partly from the office. We regularly meet colleagues on the workfloor but also online via Teams to discuss cross functional issues and to stay connected to each other and our networks.
