Data Engineer - Data Migration

As a Data Engineer, you are the technical expert within the team. You are excited at the idea of building an data ecosystem that helps 1000s of data consumers within Booking to fully exploit our available data and unleash business insights with ML powered solutions. Your knowledge of Workflow Management, BI Tooling, Data Engineering and Analytics helps raise the quality of analytics & ML together within the Booking community. You need to support the influencing, differentiation, and guidance to business and technology strategies, as they relate to data, through constant cross-functional interaction. You ask the right questions to the right people in order to align data strategy with commercial strategy, demonstrating technical expertise and business knowledge. You will support solution envisaging and technical designs, combining it with hands on work, going deep to investigate the most complex scenarios. 

Key Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Rapidly crafting and developing next-generation scalable, flexible, and high-performance data pipelines, platforms and frameworks and adopt it across the company
  • Ability to work alone and self-steer initiatives; influencing the community of data engineers
  • Driving exploration of new tools and technologies to meet business requirements regarding performance, scaling, data observability, data processes & data governance.
  • Making integrations between multiple applications, tools, and services, both on premise and in the cloud
  • Help the team to communicate externally and internally, resolve conflicts
  • Mentoring, coaching, and steering colleagues across technical challenges
  • Maintain tech documentation and support practices in the team on a high quality level
  • Acting as a technical leader for resolving problems, with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Supporting the growth of Booking through interviewing, on-boarding, or other recruitment efforts.
  • Continuously evolve your craft by keeping up to date with the latest developments in data engineering and related technologies
  • Actively contribute to Data Engineering at Booking through training, exploration of new technologies, interviewing, onboarding and mentoring colleagues
  • Push for improvements, scaling and extending data engineering tooling and infrastructure, collaborating with central teams
  • Role Qualifications and Requirements:

    Are you a data-driven engineer who enjoys solving problems, who initiates solutions and technical discussions? Do you believe that any challenge can be scaled with the right mindset and tools?

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in this field.
  • Proficiency in 1 or more server side programming languages -- preferably Python
  • Experience with crafting and building large scale data pipelines in distributed environments with technologies such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Kafka, Spark and MySQL.
  • Proven experience with SQL, Spark API etc.
  • Proven experience working with Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Experience running Spark on Kubernetes is a plus
  • Experience using scheduled workflow management tools – preferably Apache Airflow
  • Hands on experience of developing in and working on the open source data technologies
  • Ability to drive and take the lead in projects from a technical perspective
  • Ability to understand and formulate meaningful business metrics
  • Good understanding of basic analytics and machine learning concepts
  • Preferably a university degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related fields
  • Excellent communication (written and spoken) and stakeholder management.
