Java Developer

As a Java Developer you’ll develop and improve applications for the lotteries. Every day at work you’ll be doing your part for all the charities we support.

Gerben Schepers, Java Developer: "I've had the opportunity to work with several teams, including a multidisciplinary international team. We work together on reusable elements, such as a design system, and various services for all our lotteries in the Netherlands and abroad. We run everything serverless via AWS, so we can focus on business logic, not maintenance. With all the learning opportunities and the great atmosphere, I feel right at home."

As a Java Developer, you’ll:

  • work daily on developing and optimising our lottery systems;
  • be part of one of our backend scrum teams, collaborating closely with other scrum teams and lottery departments;
  • discuss technical and operational aspects with solution architects.

  • You’d describe yourself as follows:

  • innovative and highly communicative;
  • a Java Developer with 3–5 years of experience with the latest LTS releases (we use 17 and will soon be transitioning to 21);
  • possessing a strong knowledge of solutions such as Spring, Maven, Jenkins, and PostgreSQL/Amazon RDS;
  • possessing technical expertise in Linux, JMS over message brokers (ActiveMQ, Amazon SQS), REST, Docker, and Kubernetes;
  • (ideally) experienced with Cadence, Activiti, Flowable or similar orchestration solutions.
  • About us:

    The Postcode Lottery Group is a marketing-driven international non-profit organisation. We operate lotteries to raise funds for a fairer, greener and healthier world. Our players win with their neighbours and generate money for charities together – it’s a win-win!

    We’ve raised more than €12.6 billion for thousands of good causes since 1989. We’re the third-largest private charitable donor in the world. Working here alongside more than 1,500 fellow team members in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and Norway, you’ll be helping to build a better world every day!

    About the team:

    The Group Tech department is the backbone of the Postcode Lottery Group. Working here, you’ll be part of the team that bears responsibility for all IT operations, ensuring all lottery rounds run smoothly, developing and managing the necessary systems, and setting up and maintaining digital workstations for more than 600 colleagues. You’ll collaborate with all the Lotteries’ departments and with external parties. You'll stay in close touch with colleagues at the Postcode Lotteries abroad, working with them to create the best IT solutions.

    This will make you happy:

  • A monthly salary between €4,200 and €6,200, a variable year-end bonus and an excellent pension scheme, and 28 days’ holiday a year based on a 40-hour week and flexible working hours.
  • We believe it’s important that you’re able to keep developing professionally and personally, so we support ongoing training. The Lottery Academy offers a wide range of courses. And there are plenty of opportunities to grow within the organisation.
  • You’ll work in our sustainable building within walking distance of Amsterdam Zuid station, and you'll get an NS Business Card, which lets you travel for free all over the Netherlands, even outside working hours!
  • We like to celebrate our successes with our colleagues and charity partners at well-attended monthly drinks and parties.
  • We know exercising and relaxing are good for you. So we offer free boot camp, Pilates and kickboxing classes, and an employee running group that trains for events together. And you’ll enjoy free entry to more than 145 museums, plus theatre and cinema discounts.
  • You’ll receive your full salary (100%) during childbirth and parental leave.
  • To help you get involved in our charity partners’ work, we offer project visits, plus talks in our on-site auditorium. You can also volunteer three days a year during working hours, potentially with colleagues.

    We believe an inclusive organisation is the ideal breeding ground for creativity, collaboration and innovation. Employee solidarity is important to us, too. Each of us has a part to play in that – we are the organisation, after all. We strive to make everyone feel at home. That means keeping an open mind and paying attention to each other’s welfare.

    Can you see yourself as part of the team? We encourage you to apply – whatever your roots, religion, age, ability to work or life philosophy.
