Job Description
Research and development (R&D) is essential to Boskalis. We continuously invest in the development of new methods and cutting-edge technology to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and environmental sustainability of our dredging, offshore energy and salvage activities. The R&D department of Boskalis is a cool place to work if you want to make your mark on highly diverse challenges and solutions. For example, R&D is involved in optimizing environmentally friendly dredging, developing logistical simulations for offshore wind installation projects, and devising on machine learning methods for decision support on underwater inspections or soil characterization.
A R&D engineer takes an active approach in pioneering prototype engineering challenges and deploying creative solutions in partnership with our engineering & data science department. Your responsibilities will include implementing technical and methodological advancements across various business units' projects. Your expertise in generating innovative solutions will be directed towards practicality, feasibility, and business viability. Additionally, as an innovative team member, you will have the opportunity to work on experimental topics.
In the role of R&D engineer you will work on a variety of projects. You can think about projects such as:
Apply physics-based modelling on vessel sensor and soil investigation data to support operational decision making.
Design and validate new optimization and simulation models to increase efficiency, while simultaneously reduce our emission footprint.
Test a market source robotics solution in the splash zone at a transformer substation or augmented reality vision technology to increase safety on salvage diving projects.
Good to know: we are always looking for ways to embed our commitment to sustainability into the concrete projects we implement around the world. And speaking of overseas: as a data and digital R&D engineer, you may have the opportunity to work abroad for short periods of time.
Your responsibilities as a R&D engineer:
Working in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to the process of design and modification of digital solutions, equipment, and work methods.
Elaborating ideas and business needs into new concepts and generating alternatives.
Applying and further developing new data science techniques.
Rapid prototyping and validation of new models in project settings.
Communicating your findings to the business and support knowledge transfer to the organization and external communities
You can make your mark as R&D Engineer if you:
have a Master’s or PhD degree in engineering, computer or data science, mathematics, or other relevant fields
preferably have 1 to 3 years of working experience in an R&D environment
enjoy developing software in which complex calculations play a central role and are willing to advance these skills and learn new things (knowledge of Python is required, other languages are beneficial).
are familiar with one of the following topics: machine learning, algorithm development, signal processing, experimental design and/or numerical mathematics.
have good command of written and spoken English, preferably also Dutch.
are eligible to work in the EU.

Extra information
Your team: You will be part of the corporate R&D department of Boskalis. The department exist of a team of 25 engineers with a passion for development and innovation.
Where you will work: For office-based roles, in consultation with your manager and your team, you work partly at home and partly in the office.
Full/part-time job : The position of R&D engineer is a full-time (40 hours a week).
