Position Overview

The Process Improvement Engineer (PIE) is responsible for identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance productivity, safety, efficiency and sustainability in the manufacturing operations. 

In this PIE role you are the key contact person for Process Improvements for the units in the plant you are responsible for. 

You will play a crucial role in driving continuous improvement initiatives and ensuring the smooth functioning of process improvements from initiative towards Basis of Design and for Management of Changes from start to implementation.

You are the key initiative owner to coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement solutions that optimize production processes, improve EHS and reliability performance.

Improving plant performance of production units by: 

  • Initiating and coordinating Management Of Change (MOC) initiatives. Follow-up with all relevant project members of these MOC’s from idea towards implementation. 
  • New raw material usage approvals and reviews
  • Improving the process safety performance of production units by initiating and coordinating Process Safety Management initiatives together with the Process Safety Engineer for the production units you are responsible for, such as (re)-HAZOP & LOPA studies, SIL classification studies and reviewing safety reports.
  • Providing engineering and/or technology input and expertise as Process Improvement Engineer for operations to improve stable operations of the plants, but also to collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Initiate or support sustainability & energy transition related improvements via the Management of Change process & CAPEX stage gate process.
  • In the lead for Process Improvement projects during the initial phase of a capital investment project. Coordination is key to get the right multidisciplinary team on board to review the initiative and to take the correct actions to meet objective or unmet need and come up with preferred proposal for Basis of Design phase (which will be carried out by Process Engineers & Project management department).
  • Responsible as PIE for reviewing & supporting test runs in the plants.
  • Analyzing production processes and identify areas for improvement.
  • Together with Production Engineers responsible for optimal yield, utility, and reliability performance.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize production efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Participate in root cause analysis to identify and resolve production issues and minimize downtime.
  • Providing input on the monthly KPIs with respect to MOCs and safety performance towards the Process Improvement Manager.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to continuously improve production processes. 
  • Initiate or support improvements based on plant performance or best practices and upcoming industry trends, such as automation solutions, better quality control measures, reliability, safety, and sustainability improvements

  • Job Responsibilities

    HSE: 

  • Provide support/input for the improvement of Pernis manufacturing HSE policies & procedures and Process Safety Management process.
  • Responsible for defining the process safety and technology operating windows. 
  • Operability:

  • Responsible for developing plans to improve the manufacturing targets (e.g., HSE, reliability, yield, utility consumption, quality, variable, and direct fixed costs).
  • Responsible to develop, together with key stakeholders, a long-term improvement plan.
  • Co-responsible (together with manufacturing and supply chain) for manufacturing input for operational agreements with raw material suppliers, toll manufacturers and other third parties.
  • Responsible for the improvement of Pernis manufacturing management processes. 
  • Costs:

  • Provide support/input to improve and reduce operational costs. 
  • Co-responsible for providing input and feedback on investment costs of projects carried out and/or started. 
  • MOC/Projects:

  • Responsible for initiation and implementation of Management Of Change items and productivity projects.
  • In the lead for Process Improvement projects during the initial phase of a capital investment project.

  • Responsible to follow up on abnormalities to provide long term compliance to the defined operating windows, including initiation of Root Cause Analyses.
