Ashland has an exciting opportunity to join our Ashland Industries Netherlands business at our Zwijndrecht plant for a Process Safety & Laboratory EHS Engineer.

This position is responsible for supporting and advising the plant regarding the product process safety and lab support to the facility. The position requires collaboration with the local and global EHS and global Process Safety team and reports to the Zwijndrecht EHS manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Act as the subject matter expert for Process Safety Management/Seveso, High Risk Work, Machine Safety, EU regulations, Incident investigation. This can include, but is not limited to:
    • Leading process hazard analysis (PHA), combustible dust assessment (CDA), and risk assessments (LOPA) to ensure process hazards are identified and verify that appropriate prevention and/or mitigation layers are installed/implemented to meet company risk criteria;
    • Atex, Safety report, Explosion safety document, QRA;
    • Communicating results/issues/health of facility programs;
    • Identify non-compliance issues or risks;
    • Recommend programs and procedures to support compliance/risk issues;
    • Provide EHS support for capital projects;
    • Monitor EHS legislative and regulatory activity;
    • Root Cause Analysis facilitation, assistance, reviewing;
    • Implement programs and plans;
    • Participate in international cross functional teams as needed;
    • Monitor program effectiveness;
    • Act as subject matter expertise for nuclear devises (KEW).
       
  • Provide EHS Support to on-site R&D Laboratory.  This can include, but is not limited to:
    • Ensuring that EHS programs and policies are in place to promote an environmentally compliant and safe working environment for R&D employees, contractors and visitors;
    • Specific focus is on hazard assessment of laboratory operations, compliance inspections, and incident reporting and investigation and metrics reporting;
    • Provide site EHS training, including new hire orientation and onboarding;
    • Support site emergency response programs and act in an incident command role when needed;
    • Assist with site industrial hygiene programs including maintenance of safety data sheets, ergonomic assessments of office and lab work environments;
    • Facilitate management of change (MOC) activities on new equipment, chemical processes and organizational changes that affect EHS compliance;
    • REACH for lab chemicals.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • A relevant science/engineering degree is required;
  • 5+ years’ experience in process safety and/or process engineering field in the chemical manufacturing industry;
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, chemical, or refinery setting;
  • Working knowledge in consequence modeling and/or process simulation software is a plus (e.g. PHAST, Superchems, Aspen, etc.);
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements and RAGAGEP (e.g. Seveso, API, NFPA, DIERS, etc.);
  • Experience in pressure relief design and analysis (DIERS) is a plus;
  • Subject matter expertise in PSM elements with a focus on PHA/LOPA, MOC/PSSR and MI;
