Mechanical Engineering Internship: Design a reusable version of an optical component
Location Veldhoven, Netherlands Degree Bachelor Experience Team Research & development Job category Mechanical engineering Travel Reference J-00253841-962
Are you a bachelor or master student in Mechanical Engineering? Do you have experience in CAD and knowledge in mechanical tolerances? Are you solution oriented? Then this internship might be interesting for you!
The group Sensors Mechanics and Stage Positioning Modules is part of the Mechanical Development cluster and is responsible for the design of optical sensor systems, such as interferometers and image sensors.
During the design of high precision measurement systems, thermal expansion is considered critical and effort is taken to use materials of low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE). The low CTE of these materials often comes with specific mechanical properties like brittleness and low strength, as well as high costs. Therefore, the ability to reuse these parts is considered beneficial.
The assignment consists of redesigning a rod and its interfaces of low CTE material including its couplings, which is connecting to critical parts of the metrology chain. The current glued design is supposed to become reusable. Thus, the focus is to reuse the expensive part of low CTE material but not necessary limited to it. The process of dismounting and remounting during the reuse approach needs to be considered as well. Therefore, you will:
