Requirements System Engineer
Location: Hengelo, Netherlands
About the team
Navy vessels are designed to operate in high-threat environments. These threats are becoming faster, more maneuverable, and more complex. Anti-ship missiles go three to five times faster than the speed of sound, with increasingly complex behavior. At the same the possibilities of modern navy vessels to counter threats are also expanding. When several of these threats come up against them simultaneously, it becomes increasingly difficult for human operators to take efficient and effective protection measures. To aid the crew in effectively combatting these threats at the right time in the right manner, and thus ultimately improve their change of survival, Thales is developing the Above Water Warfare – Fire Control System (AWW-FCS) Product.
The AWW-FCS Product is a next-generation fire control system that is able to integrate different weapon, effectors, and sensor systems, including Thales’s own high-end radar systems like the next-generation dual-band radar suite , integrating a new Active Phased-Array Radar (APAR) with a Sea Master 400 radar. The AWW-FCS continuously assesses which methods are best suited to engage the assigned targets. The AWW-FCS subsequently controls the radar and weapon systems with intelligent algorithms to ensure the target is correctly tracked, targeted, and hit.
About your future job
System engineering can be seen as the ‘steering wheel’ in Thales Naval. We determine what engineering and operations need to develop for our customer. System engineers within AWW-FCS do not only focus on the now, but have to define a system architecture that enables future extensions and improvements of the AWW-FCS Product.
As a Requirements System Engineer, you will work as part of a team system engineers and you have a link to self-organizing Agile/ Scrum teams. Your scope is the definition and management of requirements for software development. We have requirement system engineers both at the level of Above Water Warfare Systems in which an instantiation of the AWW-FCS is integrated (solution level) and on the product level of the AWW-FCS (system level). You are a vital link between customers representatives and their requirements, the product roadmap, the product architecture and the development teams.
On solution level you will be responsible for defining the integration level of the functionality of the AWW-FCS Product and the specific actuators (guns, launchers), effectors (ammunition, missiles) and sensors for a specific customer project. Taking the project demands into account you ensure clear and ready-to-use, traceable requirements that are effectively managed across multiple outlets to the AWW-FCS Product system level.
On the system level you will be responsible for the link between the AWW-FCS Product system requirements and the scrum teams. Taking the requirements of solution level and matching them with software possibilities, you ensure the requirements for the AWW-FCS Product development are matching customer requirements and you prevent over-developing (gold plating).
Thales offers careers, not just jobs. You will have the opportunity to develop towards senior expert in your area of expertise and grow to a Product Owner position for a Scrum team.
