You are able to maintain a broad overview and make connections. You enjoy giving direction to a team, you are proactive and a strong communicator. You are strongly motivated to apply research in the field and have (some) experience or affinity with sourcing external financing.
As a senior researcher in autonomous systems and digital twins your focus is on Biodiversity and Plant Health. You are an expert in the areas of Environmental Science, Computer Vision, and Data Science (including a grasp of Machine Learning). A background in Biology is an asset, but not a prerequisite.
In your research, you work with various biodiversity monitoring systems, including fixed sensor networks, but also drones, robots, and other, often autonomous vehicles. The research locations vary between self-contained ecosystems like greenhouses and the roadside ‘rights-of-way’ along expressways. You gather the data from these diverse sources, analyze and interpret them, and visualize them in a public-friendly way. This way you actively contributing to a data-driven sustainable society and the digitalization of work, center lines of research of our Centre of Expertise at THUAS.

The research group Smart Sensor Systems is already an active player in the fields of Autonomous Systems and Multi-Modal Sensing. You are contributing to this as well as our growing expertise in Biodiversity Monitoring. As such, you interact with national and international consortia, other THUAS research groups, and professionals working in the field. One such consortium is Grounded, with four THUAS and four Saxion research groups working on the digitalization of our knowledge of the surface and soil, focusing on climate adaptation, vegetation scans, and biodiversity monitoring.

What do we expect from you?
You have (recently) finished your PhD (or have a MSc degree and an equivalent amount of research experience) within a technical field, on a subject covering one of the following: environmental science / imaging / a technical science / robotics / electrical engineering / mechatronics / data science.
