Sr Wireless Modem Design Engineer

Job Description

Job Purpose:

  • Specify, develop, verify, and support the Wireless Modems used in the Wireless SoCs of the Connectivity Solutions Division of Renesas, throughout the complete project cycle.
  • Closely follow standardization efforts and translate existing and roadmap radio PHY requirements into highly efficient and innovative algorithms, architectures, and modem hardware solutions, in order to provide Renesas a competitive advantage in the IC market.
  • Contribute to shaping the future of Renesas wireless products.
  • Principal Accountabilities:

  • Translate complex radio PHY standardization specifications, as well as customer proprietary PHY requirements, into optimal modem algorithm, architecture, and hardware solutions, meeting performance, gate count, power, testability, product type-approval, and timeline constraints.
  • Execute feasibility studies.
  • Understand the background of the standards and application scenarios for system implementation.
  • Break down the RF and DBB specifications, develop high level models, and run high level verification simulations.
  • Review and optimize existing modem algorithms and implementations.
  • Verify the functionality and performance of the proposed modem solutions in simulation environments or using fpga test platforms.
  • Evaluate the modem solutions in the lab and fine-tune the configuration of the modem towards an optimum system performance and system power consumption balance.
  • Support the HW/SW development for evaluation, characterization, and testing.
  • Troubleshoot design and architectural issues.
  • Document all development / design issues.
  • Work closely with multidiscipline team members, and contribute to datasheets, architectural spec’s and development plans.
  • Support DFT strategy and implementation.
  • Support test development and ramping up production.
  • Participate and have a consulting function in reviews of designs, of radio low level driver firmware, as well as of test results from evaluation, characterization, and production testing.
  • Function as lead engineer in complex projects.
  • Schedule tasks and report progress to project leader; identify project problems.
  • Guide other engineers.

    Qualifications

    Required

  • 5+ years of industry experience in Modem algorithm and Modem hardware design, with chip commercialization track record.
  • Deep understanding of Digital Communications and DSP Theory, including algorithms such as timing recovery, channel estimation, equalization, forward-error correction, filter design, signal estimation and detection, automatic gain control, RF impairments estimation and correction, etc.
  • Proficiency with hardware description languages, and with Matlab & Simulink for low power / low gate count algorithm development, modeling (floating-point and fixed-point), and optionally for High Level Synthesis.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Radio System Architectures, Software Defined Radio techniques, and experience on wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread, DECT, or Wi-Fi.
  • Experience in chip bring-up, modem performance optimization, use of lab equipment.
  • Excellent problem solving, debugging, and analytical (linear algebra, random processes, etc.) skills.
  • Eagerness to contribute new ideas, build consensus, and drive tasks to completion.
  • Competition awareness.
  • Excellent team working skills, multi-disciplinary focus.
  • Fluent in English language (written and oral).
  • Competent of being the lead engineer in projects.
  • Desirable

  • C and Python Language skills.
  • Experience with version control systems, e.g. Git.
