Data Analyst - Financial Services

Booking.com is seeking a Data Analyst to join and strengthen our Financial Services Data Science and Analytics team. The Data Analyst will drive analytics tasks such as reporting, visualization and analysis needs in Financial Services - bringing insight into our Banking, Payment, Treasury and Financial Services operations. They will have a high level understanding of the business problems in Financial Services, and collaborate closely with the business stakeholders and technical teams to solve these problems through application of data analytics. They will use their experience and consultation with stakeholders in problem-definition, setting success metrics and shaping the way forward through data insights and effective communication with their audience.

The successful candidate will report to the Manager of the Data Science and Analytics team within the Financial Services organization, and is expected to have a high-level understanding of business problems, working closely with business stakeholders to devise solutions. With an exceptional ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, the role requires to work with business stakeholders and prioritize tasks for significant business impact. 

The candidate will leverage their knowledge of data, workflows, methods, and tools to independently lead analysis and reporting efforts, ensuring the delivery of scalable, reproducible, and long-term solutions across all facets of their work. The candidate can find opportunities to apply new concepts and approaches into action when business and user needs demand it. They can deliver scalable, reproducible and long-term focused solutions in every area of their work (ie. reporting, visualization, influencing business decisions through data, etc).

The role is critical to ensure that the Treasury & Financial Services department has sufficient insights, both from internal and external sources, to appropriately define its strategy, key priorities and identify problems and needs for change early.

Tasks & responsibilities:

  • Own the design and delivery of Data Analytics solutions in Financial Services, based on business requirements, bringing them from the initial idea-generation phase to implementation independently.
  • Work autonomously on consuming data, preparing it for analytical use, translating business problems to data stories and leveraging input from business stakeholders to determine the right technical solutions to deliver customer value. 
  • Leverage previous knowledge, experience and substantial skills in data analysis and data visualization to answer business questions in the most efficient way. Understand stakeholder needs and create intuitive and insightful visualizations that translate data into actionable insights to answer those needs. 
  • Work with the team to identify and manage stakeholders in operational, project-based, and managerial roles. Effectively communicates, addresses stakeholder needs, and conveys complex analysis results in a clear manner. Guide junior colleagues in stakeholder engagement.
  • Is flexible in adopting existing internal and external Data Analytics approaches, proposing and spotting opportunities to apply new approaches and expanding their technical competencies and their peer’s when a more efficient way presents itself.
  • Leverage Data Analytics for impact while learning to incorporate scalability, reproducibility and long term orientation in their work. 
  • Support community projects aimed at making other data professionals more effective, actively participating in community strengthening activities, and connecting with peers beyond their area. 
  • Is knowledgeable about the larger data ecosystem at Booking and how it relates to the work they do.
  • Collaborate with peers, anticipating data needs to ensure smooth progress of their individual projects.
  • Ensure quality of work by validating it through peer review.
  • Influence business decisions within the Financial Services team.
  • Maintain various existing risk tableau dashboards and continuously drive improvements based on business feedback. 
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests from the Financial Services business teams. Think strategically and make propositions of required data analysis and dashboards to support the financial services business needs (both based on internal and external data sources).
  • Skills and experience required:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, or Engineering is preferred, underscoring a robust foundation and dedication to excellence in the field.
  • Previous experience in Payments, a Fintech or Financial Services company or a Bank is a very strong advantage. 
  • Business acumen and ability to translate business problems into data problems. Ability to translate business requirements and liaise with engineers to build the solution.
  • Goal oriented and solution focused. 
  • Stakeholder management & Communication: Experience in dealing with non technical stakeholders.
  • 3-5 years experience in data analytics, capable of generating insightful analyses and creating compelling data visualizations.
  • Advanced SQL capabilities (encompassing joins and window functions), proficiency in Python (specifically PySpark), and a solid understanding of Big Data ecosystems, particularly Hadoop.
  • Proficiency with data visualization tools such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Drive to consistently stay up to date with data analytics
