Director - Renewables & Power

We have a great opportunity for you to join our Renewables & Power (R&P) team within the Energy Sector Coverage of Wholesale Banking. The role

The position is within the Amsterdam Energy - R&P team, which is leading and arranging debt financings in the renewable energy industry. This position is for an experienced senior professional with the focus to originate and execute project and acquisition finance transactions for existing and new R&P clients primarily active in the the Western, Northern and Central European renewable energy markets. Typical transactions financed by the team include amongst others onshore wind, offshore wind, battery energy storage systems and solar projects, both greenfield and brownfield.

The team

The Energy sector team is one of the global specialist sector coverage teams and sits at the heart of ING Wholesale Banking. We provide banking services including complex financial solutions to Energy clients in the EMEA region, the Americas and in Asia-Pacific. The Renewables & Power team is instrumental in achieving ING’s ambitious new renewables target to triple the financing of renewable power generation to billion annually by 2025, up from billion in 2022. In your role you will report into the Head of Renewables & Power NL based in Amsterdam.

The global Renewables & Power team encompasses approximately 90 professionals located in the major financial centers around the world.

Your Responsibilities

You will be a member of multiple deal teams involved in transactions which have a large impact on our clients. You work closely together with team members in Amsterdam, Brussels, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Madrid, Milan and other locations in Europe, and with various product specialists & relationship managers across ING. In all your activities you will strive to meet client needs in the best way and beyond. As a Director in the Renewables & Power team your activities will be diverse, but your main tasks consist of:

  • Lead the origination for new R&P business opportunities with existing and new clients active in select EMEA countries
  • Lead the execution efforts for mandated transactions to ensure their timely and successful closing commercial & credit proposals, documentation negotiations and due diligence)
  • Maintain and develop (new) client relationships by actively pitching and following-up on leads and queries
  • Client coverage in collaboration with other ING product teams Capital Markets & Advisory, Corporate Finance, Energy Project Advisory, Transaction Services, Sustainable Finance) to maximize client cross-buy opportunities and total client return, including the preparation of pitches and supporting strategic discussions with R&P clients to position ING for lead mandates in financing and advisory;
  • Involvement in all stages of the financing process, with a primary focus on client relationship management, origination, structuring and execution;
  • Be the deal captain/principal in the team with ultimate responsibility over deal execution and obtaining credit and management approvals. The deal captain will present greenlight memos in commercial committees, oversee/perform due diligence, steer credit applications and ancillary documents, review and/or negotiate financing documents and material project agreements with clients, and lead discussions with credit risk department and senior management;
  • Responsible for a selected number of transactions in the portfolio and coordinate with junior/mid-level deal team members on (material) amendments, waivers and consents on transactions and provide input and support as and when needed;
  • Contribute to credit, industry & market analysis and be a senior ING representative during industry events and conferences.
  • Your Profile

    You recognize yourself in the following :

  • Post graduate Masters degree (for example: MBA/MSc/LLM);
  • Senior financial professional/banker (> 10 years of relevant experience) with strong transactional (Project Finance) & relationship management skills, commercial results; extensive knowledge of and experience in the Renewables & Power sector would be a strong plus ;
  • Strong commercial drive and high level of self-motivation, combined with a well-developed risk awareness;
  • Strong sense for business strategy and commercial opportunities, based on relevant industry knowledge and markets expertise;
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and negotiation skills;
  • Committed and dedicated team player, high quality/quantity producer;
  • In-depth knowledge of the R&P Project Finance industry, preferably with established contacts and proven deal track record;
  • Strong financial, credit analysis and modelling skills;
  • Ability to manage, motivate and mentor junior & mid-level colleagues;
  • High proficiency in English (verbal & written), and ability and willingness to travel are a must
