Hardware Developer TotaLite
Job Description
Are you ready to challenge the status quo in an industry where the state of the art feels stuck in the early 2000s? If you're eager to make a significant impact and redefine the benchmarks for asset monitoring, we want to meet you.
At TotaLite, we lead the change in asset monitoring, revolutionizing how we observe real-time displacements in essential infrastructure like bridges, tunnels, rail tracks, and industrial sites. Our secret weapon? A cutting-edge optical sensor technology that pushes the envelope, enabling us to detect structural displacements with millimeter precision from up to 160 meters away. With this level of precision, we’re not just pushing boundaries—we’re setting new standards. And oh boy, we can’t wait to share it with the world.
As part of Fugro, TotaLite based in Rotterdam, merges solid, time-honored values with the agility of a startup. We’ve rallied a top-tier team around the best of both worlds: commitment, trust, integrity, and innovation from our parent company, combined with the speed, flexibility, and creative freedom inherent in startup culture. This unique blend has poised us for remarkable breakthroughs.
As our Senior Hardware Developer, you get hands-on with our technology. You will lead the journey of TotaLite hardware, from initial design to fully industrialized products. This includes our state-of-the-art camera, sensor, gateway, and accessories, spanning electronics, firmware, mechanics, and optics.
You're not just an engineer behind a desk; you're a creator in the lab. You'll build, test, and perfect our hardware, making sense of oscilloscope readings, tuning LED lights, configuring micro-light sensors, and processing data to achieve millimeter-precise displacement measurements. It’s not just about creating well-engineered products; it’s about ensuring they are robust, tested, and ready to be delivered to our customers.
Here are some exciting challenges you may tackle:
Developing and optimizing firmware and hardware interactions to push the boundaries of what our sensor can perceive.
Innovating in how we package and deliver complex sensor systems, ensuring durability and reliability in the field.
Designing accessories that make our system more robust, reliable and user friendly.
In your role, your impact is tangible and immediate. You'll see the results of your work in real-world applications, helping our clients to monitor and maintain vital infrastructure with cutting-edge technology. Just like the software developers who craft our user interfaces, you'll touch various aspects of the product development cycle, ensuring that the hardware not only meets but exceeds the expectations of those who rely on it daily.
What you'll do:
Lead the development projects of our hardware products and accessories to deliver the product on quality, time and cost; adding value to the customers;
Assure the product is validated and the exact operating window is proven;
Industrialize the TotaLite hardware products to enable our commercial plans;
Manage the supply chain during operations so meet the market demand;
Build strong relationships with external partners, vendors, and industry experts.
What it takes:
5+ years of experience with engineering of electronics and firmware; designing PCBs and FPGAs, knowing how to code in C and a FPGA code like Verilog;
3+ years of experience in leading (engineering) projects;
Experience working in a product / tech business;
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Bonus:
Experience with industrialisation and supply chain management;
Affinity with optics and geometry;
Experience in mechanics.
Why TotaLite?
We are a remote-first company with the head office in the heart of Rotterdam. We’re not a family, but we do have families and try to keep work projects from dominating our lives. We offer a competitive salary and an annual company reward as we celebrate success together, and you’ll be rewarded for contributing to the overall success of the business. Hopefully, that’s enough to keep you intrigued; here’s what you should care about:
We’re a small team;
There will be an unusual amount of autonomy and decision-making power. You will be making real product decisions that directly impact users, on a daily basis, without anyone standing over your shoulder telling you what to do;
Virtually all customer communication and documentation are in writing. All of our communication, whether it’s verbal or written, is in English. Even at the office. Clear writing and speaking English is essential;
Part of our incredible journey is clearly down to our amazing team, and we strongly believe in giving people a space to truly, authentically be themselves;
We are an unusually public team. You'd want to be comfortable working in open channels rather than secretively over in a dark corner;
We’re a real startup - hopefully that goes without saying - and this is a real, full-time job with flexible and hybrid working arrangements, laptop allowance, and regular team events;
We even offer a Fugro modern pension plan, and social security contributions collective health insurance, training and coaching options; and a corporate fitness plan. All the standard stuff.
How we hire people
You will receive an automated confirmation-email of the receipt of your application;
Kick off call with a recruiter, not really an interview but the chance to learn more about how we do things;
Expert call, talk with the godfather of TotaLite hardware to dive deeper into the technologies;
Take home challenge, put your skills to the test. We know this won't show us all of your talents, but we can get a nice insight into how you work and vice versa;
Hiring Manager, you’ll present the outcome of your challenge to the hiring manager. This is a deeper dive into expectations for the role, the way you’d approach these challenges and gives the view on your skills;
Meet the culture ambassador, our culture is unique and so are you! Check your ego at the door because these cats are not interested in whether you're the best engineer. We want to hear all about the things that get you out of bed each morning, the special interests you have or random skills that you can teach us. This is also your chance to ask about the behaviors that make us who we are, warts and all - because hiring is a two-way street!;
If we are both still positive, we will make you an offer, and with that we hope to welcome you at TotaLite!
We promise you can be yourself
Don’t meet every single requirement? Go ahead and apply anyway! Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification and we think this sucks. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and we are committed to building a diverse team that feels that they are valued in the workplace. If you’re looking at our page and you do not identify yourself, don't be discouraged to apply. You can help make our TotaLite even better. We do not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, age, mental or physical ability, or any way you represent yourself. We strongly believe diversity makes for more successful teams and it's one of our biggest secrets of success.
