Senior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer

OCI Nitrogen Iowa (OCI) is looking for a Senior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to join our Maintenance team in Wever, Iowa. The Senior I&C Engineer is responsible for developing, installing, managing, and maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery, and processes. The primary objective of this role is to ensure that these systems and processes are operating effectively, efficiently, and safely, while simultaneously ensuring all control systems adhere to Industry Best Practices. This individual ensures safety instrumented systems and critical controls are compliant with PSM.

As a Senior I&C Engineer, you will:

  • Assist I/E maintenance team in troubleshooting field instruments such as pressure, temperature, level, flow measuring devices, analyzers, and control valves.
  • Assist I/E maintenance team in troubleshooting Electrical equipment including switch gears, VFD, MCC, UPS, electrical control systems, etc.
  • Play a major engineering role in electrical and instrumentation projects including inhouse projects and modifications and outsourced projects.
  • Prepare and approve electrical and instrumentation specifications and drawings, including equipment/device data sheets, loop diagrams, instrument index, wiring diagrams, single line diagrams, panel wiring diagrams.
  • Specify, size, and select instrument devices such as flow elements, temperature elements, thermowells, control valves, level measuring devices, analyzers, gas detectors, instrument cables, instrument panels, etc.
  • Assist electrical engineers with specifying and selecting electrical equipment such as switch gears, transformers, VFDs, MCCs, electrical cables, electrical control panels, etc.
  • Collaborate actively with DCS engineers to identify I/O points in DCS/PLC systems for new field instrument additions.
  • Lead and participate in management of change “MOC” process for electrical and instrumentation. MOC process will require I/E engineers to review, create and update I/E engineering documents.
  • Review, prepare and approve electrical and instrumentation preventive and predictive maintenance programs. improve existing plans or develop new ones as needed.
  • Lead and participate in Root Cause Analysis for electrical and instrumentation incidents, provide technical solutions to avoid repeating incidents.
  • Liaison with manufacturers and vendors to select right electrical and instrument equipment and devices.
  • Lead and play major role in evaluating and improving reliability of electrical and instrument equipment, devices and systems.
  • Work with vendors and maintenance team on complex analytical equipment including CEMS to ensure reliable and accurate measurement.
  • Mentor Junior I&E engineers and participate in training of technicians on electrical and instrumentation technical subjects.
  • Assess, identify, and recommend spare parts for electrical and instrument equipment based on vendor recommendations, probability of failure and system criticality.
  • Manage SIF test activities when SIF system validation is required.
  • Review P&ID drawings to ensure logics and control philosophy properly reflected.
  • Participate actively in ongoing development of safety improvement plans and training of staff.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Experience and Skills

  • 10+ years’ engineering/maintenance experience in chemical industry or refining environment in engineering position. Fertilizer manufacturing experience a plus. Knowledge of engineering standards in oil and gas/chemical industries, such as API, ISA, IEC, NEC,
  • NFPA, etc.

  • Experience in engineering firms, including basic and detail engineering a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in DCS, ESD, PLC hardware and software. Yokogawa DCS, PLC and HMI programming a plus.
  • Knowledge of Safety Instrumented System (SIS) standards and applications
  • Experience in SAP or similar ERP programs a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of field instrument selection, application, calibration, troubleshooting, including analyzers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, TEAMS, PowerPoint).
  • Physical and Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Wearing a respirator when/where required to perform inspections/job duties.
  • Ability to climb straight ladders. Some work may require heights more than 100 feet.
  • Confined space entry may be required.
  • Wearing hearing protection within high level noise areas as required.
  • Must be willing to be available 24/7 on short notice to support plant operations.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license. Always ensure HR has a copy of a current, valid license on file.
