This primary focus of the Software Controls Engineer consists of leading control system design and implementation components of complex automated systems within warehouse distribution centers. This position includes developing machine level control of conveyor systems and similar material handling equipment technology including site deployment, commissioning, and testing activities. This position is a part of project teams working alongside Mechanical & Electrical Engineering and Project & Site Management resources thru system design and layout and progressing thru project implementation. This role includes overseeing and delegating deployment and commissioning tasks to software control engineering support resources.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Developing and configuring Fortna Warehouse Control System (FortnaWCS) Software in the office and at Client sites with Beckhoff or Siemens Technology
Collaborating with mechanical and electrical engineering to define system control requirements (concept reviews, system functionality, machine control design requirements).
Supporting development and deployment planning activities in conjunction with project management.
Performing testing, debugging, implementation and support during “go-live” at Client site.
Overseeing and managing software control scope, schedule, and budget delivery.
Overseeing and directing project site support resources during deployment and commissioning activities.
Making modifications and troubleshooting industrial motor controls, I/O and pneumatic subsystems and variable speed drives.
Developing, maintaining and providing documentation to Fortna’s Technical Writer.
Providing training to staff at Client site.
Responding to Client issues with immediacy.
Providing FortnaWCS control enhancements/requirements to the Software team in an effort to increase productivity and accuracy.
Making recommendations and suggestions to improve and streamline the implementation process.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate degree and 5+ years of related experience in industrial controls; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of PLCs and control systems
Experience working with mechanical and electrical material handling equipment drawings and schematics
Experience controlling conveyor systems and associated technologies (transportation, sortation, transfers, label scanning, etc.)
Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical, electrical, control software issues
Exposure to material handling equipment maintenance routines and requirements
Strong oral and written communication skills with internal and external resources
Strong detail orientation
Ability to work a flexible schedule
Strong interpersonal, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
Ability to travel extensively domestically and internationally
Ability to perform essential functions of the job
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field
Experience with communication network protocols (Ethernet IP, EtherCAT, ProfiNet, etc.)
